about

American cosmologist and astrophysicist Carl Sagan equated the Earth’s surface to the “shore” of our understanding of the vast metaphorical ocean that is our universe, and that our wading into this “ocean” allows us to begin to understand our place within it. With Nine Movements for Water, I look to remove the metaphor and examine how large bodies of water and the sensations within them allows us to understand our place in our immediate world.

Growing up in a small town in Canada, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by several beautiful freshwater lakes. As soon as spring arrived, I was instantly in the water. Diving down, being completely weightless in the vast blue-green water brings with it feelings of unease as the senses are rendered less efficient, yet a simultaneous calm is achieved as a less-familiar nature envelops you entirely. Adrift in the vastness, there’s a unique comprehension of our size and place that isn’t always available on dry land.

The nine movements comprise this suite attempt to translate the way water behaves–both with and without us–on to the aural plane as a reminder of its power and influence.
